The abbey origins date back to the VI-VII centuries, when there arose a Benedictine settlement on the ancient ''Insula Pomposia", a wooded island surrounded by two branches of the river and protected from the sea.

The period of greatest splendor began after the year thousand, when it became a flourishing monastic centre devoted to a life of prayer and work, and whose fortune was tied to the figure of the abbot San Guido.

The Pomposa monastery welcomed famous people of that time, among which you have to remember the monk Guido D'Arezzo, the inventor of the musical script based on the 7 notes system. Art lovers should not miss the chance to visit it.
